It was an early morning when I woke up to get to Runway Cycling 2007.

6 bloody am to be exact.

I rode 15 ball bruising kilometers.

I wonder if I have a SM streak in me.

Athens

The stage was set for an epic battle between 2 teams. My beloved Liverpool, against the Italians in the form of AC Milan.

I had already prepared for this day by taking the morning off from work the next day. I was prepared to get up in the morning to watch this match, planning not to shout too loudly in case I woke my parents like the last CL final.

Alas, how the best laid plans can still go wrong.

At 10 plus, I received an MSN message from a friend asking me to go to Hard Rock Cafe to watch the match with, well other Liverpool fans. It took a bit of persuasion, but at 12.30 am, I found myself outside Hard Rock Cafe, waiting in line with a bunch of other Liverpool fans, all decked in the colors of Liverpool.

When the doors finally opened to admit a red tidal wave, the place was filled to standing room only in an instant. Such was the excitement in place.

I had never been able to sing a rendition of You'll Never Walk Alone, so imagine my delight when a great round was belted out at the start of the match. Everyone raising their fist and singing their hearts out. It was a great atmosphere. Everyone was excited.

The match started and Liverpool were playing well. We were pressing them all over the pitch, forcing them to make errors, but alas, things were not to be as Pipo Inzaghi managed to deflect a free kick in.

We were visibly disappointed during the interval, but were still quietly optimistic. We had come back from 3-0 down. What's 1-0?

Alas, the best laid plans do still fall to pieces.

Try as the Redmen might, but we could not get the luck that we had needed. Lady luck had turned her back after Istanbul 2005.

But we were proud and we stood tall and we showed grace and dignity in defeat. Another rendition of You'll Never Walk Alone was belted out with gusto.

How apt the name of the song. Win or lose, you Redmen will never walk alone.

Rosenior out after '10 minutes'



Leroy Rosenior has broken the record for English football's shortest managerial reign.

BBC Five Live understands Rosenior lost his job at Torquay just 10 minutes after being introduced as the Devon club's new manager on Thursday.

Chairman Mike Bateson called him to say he had just sold the club to a group led by Colin Lee, who then reinstated himself as director of football.

Lee had only been made redundant last Monday.

Rosenior, 43, was given the head coach position at Plainmoor when Keith Curle's short-term contract expired.

Bateson told Rosenior that he did not know Lee's bid for the club was imminent when he appointed him.

It would have been the former Brentford boss's second stint in charge at Torquay.

The previous shortest tenure in charge in English football was Dave Bassett's four-day reign at Crystal Palace in 1984.

Glass Illusion

The Wind That Shakes The Barley

Sometimes, you wonder where they come up with the names for movies? From some imaginary land where they just pluck letters out of a hat and then plop them all together?

Names like "THe wind that shakes the barley" comes to mind.

But making fun of such a name would probably do a disservice to the movie. (In case you're wondering, the name comes from a haunting song sung at a funeral)

This movie is set in the backdrop of the 1920s when Ireland is coming to grips with the brutal mastery enforced by the English Empire. When things go abit too far, and people die because of the iron hand that is gripping the Irish Republic, people turn sour and rebellious.

When a man is killed for speaking Irish and refusing to speak English as demanded by some English soldiers, a doctor is persuaded to join the Irish Republic Army (IRA) to fight for the freedom of the people.

Things are rosy for a while before things turn sour. Ireland is to be granted freedom, of a sort. They get to make their own policies, have their own army, but ultimately, they have to bow down to the English Empire once again and swear fealty to the King of England.

This rips the rebellion apart as father fights against son and brother against brother as different viewpoints threaten to tear the country apart. Atrocities are commited, brother orders the excecution of his own brother. Tears are shed.

This movie has terrific acting from the young and English cast and they got the Irish accent down pat, to the extent that I didn't understand about 30% of what they were saying, even though it was in English. I was really wishing for subtitles at a certain point in time.

The movie was also interesting to me as it brought to me attention a little part of history that I am not particularly familiar with and gives me a better insight to the aims of the IRA. I don't condone them, but I think I can see what they are trying to fight for.

Also it raises interesting questions. How much freedom is there? How much is it worth? Is an illusion of freedom better then no freedom? Is there such a thing as taking things slowly on the way to freedom?

Summer Palace (Yi He Yuan)

This movie was one serious badass emo movie. It was also a movie I went to watch without having an idea of the plot or what it was about, since my first choice movie had already sold out.

Summer Palace is billed as "the most controversial movie from China" and I can see why. Set in the backdrop of the Tiananmen massacre, it liberally used images and footages taken from that period. You can see why the Chinese government basically banned Lou Ye (the director) from making movies for a 5 year period. All copies of this movies is supposed to be destroyed as well.

Also, it is very liberal in nature, showing the going on in the Beijing University at that period of time. And guess what young adolescent students do in their free time? They go at it like rabbits in heat.

But this movie isn't just about controversy, it's about the life of a young women, trying to find her way in life, to find someone for her. It traces a 2 1/2 hour torturous, winding and emo route of how she didn't get together with a guy. It showcases her thoughts, her feelings as she wrestles with her love life. She flits from one guy to another, always having sex, and yet always thinking of that one guy she doesn't want to be with.

This movie was interesting, and you could probably go on to analyze the relationships between all the characters for hours, but at the end of the day, when you see that she got married and yet still thinks about the guy and yet doesn't want to be with him, you can't help but feel sorry for her.

Tired is when

you swim 1.8km and then go for a 3 hour plus bouldering session.

It's been years since I last did rock climbing, the last time probably being in secondary school. I had a blast this time as I think I am slightly fitter this time round and could manage to have more strength to last longer throughout.

You don't really feel tired during the whole session as you're running quite a bit on adrenalin, but after the whole thing, I realized I was aching in places I didn't even realize existed.

Another thing that I learnt: Don't lean against a rock wall, it hurts.

I don't want to sleep alone

A friend once told me that everyone is essentially alone, no matter how many people he surrounds himself with. I think the picture above seems to capture that.

Another film by Tsai Ming Liang, whose previous film "Wayward Cloud", was so abstract, I still can't understand the fixation with watermelons.

This film has another fixation, a mattress and considering the title, seems rather apt. It provides comfort and support to the people lying on it. But how much more of it come from the people lying there with you?

This film isn't for everyone. Make no mistake, this is art fart (I give this one to your Eu, but the rest of the shows I watch are not art fart!). I won't even try to say that I understand even half of what was going on. When the opening scene is of a invalid person sleeping and the sound of the radio blaring in the background and it doesn't change for 3 minutes, you know you are in some pretty mind bending stuff.

This film is so filled with symbolisms that is boggles the mind. The plot is difficult to understand cause there is simply no dialog. A review said that this 2 hours plus film had dialog to fill 2 A4 size sheets of paper. That is exaggeration. It probably only fills one. But it was very ..... interesting. No other way to describe it. The plot moves along slowly. There is no back story, and you are left to figure most things out yourself as the details are slowly filled in. And even at the end of the film, you are probably none the wiser at a lot of things.

This isn't about the plot, but about the feelings and emotion generated when watching it. I didn't understand it, but deep down, I felt it. The loneliness, the longing, the need for companionship, the betrayal, the caring, the absurdness of everything in life.

The parting shot was of said mattress floating in water with lead male and his girlfriend and the Indian who has been taking care of him to homo-erotic levels. It was absurd, but you can't help feeling envy for them as they won't be sleeping alone tonight.

Lost? Pathfinders need not apply

I said I wanted to watch Pathfinder since I assumed that it was going to be out the following week.

Forward to present day and I have just watched Pathfinder.

Can I now once and for all say that it sucked? It was so not worth the wait. The action scenes were mediocre, the plot non-existent and the dialog (other then the parts where the Vikings were talking), sleep inducing.

Why on Earth did I wait so long only to be disappointed?

Hula Garu!

Hula Girls or Hula Garu (said in typical Japanese way with all the stressing and shouting) is your typical tear jerker cum feel good movie.

It tells of a coal mining town, which facing the onslaught of the changing times, finds it self getting relegated to the back seat of history with the advent of the use of oil. What used to be termed as black diamond is slowly being phased out.

So some people in the village come up with a plan to revive the village, by making, of all things, a Hawaiian village.

The story then goes on to record the trials and tribulations that the daughters of the village experience in trying to learn how to be pro dancers (from being called strippers to getting beaten by abusive dads who have lost their jobs) and their teacher who hails from Tokyo.

Unlike a typical feel good movie, where they keep making you feel good before putting you through a big fall, only for it to have a rousing rise in the end, Hula Girls goes up and down in an emotional roller-coaster. It's been a long time since I cried so much in a movie since "Be With Me". But it's a feel good movie in the end, and you know it'll be a happy ending, but that doesn't detract from the way it ended. I did feel good after it.

Yuu Aoi, who is one of the leads, looks awfully cute!

Sudden urge

Have got this sudden urge to start learning German so I can take a month off and tour Germany and play unicycle hockey with all the teams there.

Hannibal Rising

I was thinking if I should come up with some pun for the title, then I realized that would make me just as bad as the script writers for this movie.

Make no mistake about it, this movie was mediocre. In fact, at certain parts, it was just plain cringe worthy.



Sure, she's pretty hot, but was that really a valid excuse to try and squeeze her into the movie? Her English was bad (though slightly improved from her Miami Vice days) to that point of making me cringe in my seat (that and the glorious amount of violence in the movie). Her inclusion in the movie as Hannibal's aunt and lover (wait.. isn't that incest?) just doesn't really make much sense other then to use her star power in hopes of more box office earnings.

The dialog in the movie was another gripe. It looked like it was written by some 'O' level student for his English essay, not for some movie.

Some particular ones that I found amusing were

"...there is only one word to describe him - Monster."

So many words in the English language and he chose monster.. *faints*

"...love is like a knife. It can hurt you."

That, is a truly horrible analogy. How is love like a knife? *sighs*

The other thing was how the hell everyone in Europe, from Russia to France, actually speaks English (admittedly with their distinct accents)

The redeeming factor of the show would probably be the main actor who player Hannibal Lector. He got that crazy smile and look down pat.

How unlucky can you get?

Was reading Soccernet when I came upon this gem of information.

He never seems to have quite recovered from his early days of fame in the late 1990's, when he discovered that his new girlfriend was in fact a transvestite. Not that one wishes to be transvestist in any way, but it did take Guti an alarmingly long time to find out.

The History Boys

Just watched this show recently and was pretty impressed by it. I did however feel that it was a bit too intelligent for me and that a ton of things just flew above my head. This is one of those movies that probably get better with each viewing as you get more and more of it.

One thing about this movie was that you would watch this movie for the plot. If anything the plot is terribly shallow and predictable.

No. You will watch this for the ideas that this show brings out, you will watch it for the sheer irrelevance of the things being said, you might even watch it for the errr homosexual content. But you're not going to watch it for the plot.

But enough about the plot. As mentioned before, it was the ideas that were brought up that were interesting, with one of the main ones being knowledge no matter how worthless it might seem, is worth learning because it is knowledge. The boys take lessons from Hector in , off all things, general studies. It's broad, it's irrelevant, it's general and it's damm bloody interesting. It's not something that you might find a use for (which is why it probably isn't taught in Singapore, what with results orientated focus and everything). The headmaster of the boys would probably remind you of YOUR principle and how he/she kept on reminding you to study hard and get the results.

Which movie-goer would be more interested in how far their seat is from the back (unless the whole purpose is to go to the cinema and make out and have someone film you and spark a whole 'what you can do in so called public places' debate :p)? I'm more interested in how far I am from the front and not risk getting a stiff neck.

Coming out of the elevator from B2 in Plaza Singapura, when I heard this woman exclaim

Time Again

Finally caught this movie after a grand total of 0 people decided that they want to watch it.

IT'S A KOREAN DRAMA FFS! WHY DOESN'T ANYONE WANT TO WATCH IT?


But that is digressing. The feeling after watching this movies was mixed.

Wicked, Sick, Interesting, Crazy, Fucked Up! (in a good way), Fucked Up! (in a bad way), Mind Fucked.

SPOILERS START

Notice the numerous fucks there? Well seems the 2 leads were pretty intent on screwing every chance they got anyway.

But still it was interesting in the way the female lead was messing with the male lead (who for once, did not die of Kimchi poisoning). What was even more interesting was the way the male in turn messed with the female. And the deliberateness in which the story was cut.

It's not a show for everyone though, so be warned if you do want to catch it. I did find it very interesting though.

A friend asked me what DS in the Nintendo DS stands for. I thought it was Dual Screen, but apparently it issn't. In fact no one seems to know. Then it hit me. This was Nintendo's little secret (see what I did there?)

The DS stands for Damms Sony.

The whole handheld is called the Nintendo DS. Put the whole thing in and it starts to make sense. It reads Nintendo Damms Sony!

But wait! There's more. Nintendo then came out with the next handheld called the Nintendo DS lite.

And thus the DS outsold the PSP, while everyone is lauding the new Wii, the PS3 is looking at very bad reviews.

And now you know.

I just need to go figure out what the Wii stands for now. Or maybe it was just one of the bad days at Nintendo Naming Center.

Horror movie of the year

Not the dour Grudge 2. Rather it's something much more sinister. It's The Inconvinient Truth, staring Al Gore (who as he so nicely puts it, was the next President of the United States)

But what's so horrifying about a documentary? I mean there are not ghost, no monsters or anything remotely terrifying.

Wrong. It's terrifying because it's real. Seeing the rise of carbon monoxide levels and consequently the tempreature levels is scary. Seeing whole glaciers gone is scary. Seeing the apathy of people is the worst. Seeing the current administration calling him a crazy environmentalist freak is mind blowing.

I couldn't tear my eyes off like in the best horror movies. I watched in rapt attention despite wanting to close my eyes and run away from it all. But I couldn't. It was helped that Al Gore has an obvious stage presence as well as good speaking ability plus he has done the presentation a thousand times at least.

All in all, it's a good watch. It wakes you up. It brings reality to you. It shows you the inconvinient truth.

But can you handle the truth?

Sorry Kate Beckinsale!

I've sinned. I watched another Scarlett Johansen show. And it was good (the show, but Johansen was scrumptious as well.)

I heard good reviews about the show not least from imdb which gave it an 8.2

I wasn't disappointed. Despite me classifying this as a Hollywood Blockbuster sort of movie, I was plesently surprised. Sure it had the useless love interests (Johansen), the suave men (Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman) and special effects (Tesla machines!), but the plot was sublime.

I thought I had it all figured out about 3/4 into the show, but it threw so many twist that in the end, everything just fit into place. It showcases the depths that man will go to, the insanities that he will perpetuate just to be able to tell another man "I won."

All in all, a throughly enjoying show.

4/5 stars + 1 for Scarlett with that oh so fletching look. :P
